Northern Manitoba’s new COVID-19 case numbers continued to climb Oct. 14, with 45 new cases of COVID 19 announced by the provincial government.
More than 40 per cent of the 107 cases announced for the whole province on Thursday were in the north and 24 of the region’s new cases affect unvaccinated people.
20 of the new cases were confirmed by lab tests Oct. 13 while 25 were confirmed in lab tests from the previous day. Only 24 new cases for the north were announced as of 12:30 p.m. Oct. 12 but 25 more new cases were confirmed by lab tests later that day, for a one-day total of 49. That is the highest number of new infections confirmed by laboratory testing for the north in one day since April 14, when there were 56.
The province also announced two new deaths as a result of COVID-19, including that of a woman in her 50s from the north that was reported today. 1,226 Manitobans, including 57 people from the north, have died from their infections since the pandemic began.
Most of the new infections were in Norway House, where there are now 149 active cases. The number of cases also rose in the Pukatawagan/Mathias Colomb health district, where there are 118 active cases. Other health districts with active cases include Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake (40), Island Lake (19), The Pas/Opaskwayak/Kelsey (10), Cross Lake/Pimicikamak (8) and Thompson (3). There are more than 340 active cases of the virus throughout the region, and 287 new northern cases have been confirmed by lab tests since Oct. 1.
93 Manitobans are in hospital due to the coronavirus, 17 of them in intensive care. Eleven of those in hospital, including three in intensive care, are from the north. There are 962 active cases of COVID-19 in the province right now and 62 per cent of them affect unvaccinated people, compared to 29 per cent affecting fully vaccinated people and 9 per cent affecting partially vaccinated people. 66 per cent of people hospitalized with active infections are unvaccinated. Among those with active infections being treated in intensive care, the percentage who are unvaccinated is 75.
Manitoba’s five-day test positivity rate on Thursday was 3.8 per cent.
