“Artists are just children who refuse to put down their crayons.” If this sounds like you or someone you know, then hang onto those crayons (or whatever materials inspire you) and enter your work in this year’s Northern Juried Art Show (NJAS)! It’s a great opportunity to challenge yourself and have your work adjudicated by three experienced Manitoba jurors.
Adults and also youth ages 13-17 living north of the 53rd parallel in Manitoba, and also including Creighton and Denare Beach, Sask., can enter the following categories: oil painting; acrylic painting/mixed media; watercolour painting; drawing/printmaking; digital art/photography/painting-enhanced photography; fibre art; and 3D art (two subcategories — one includes works like jewelry, stained glass, basketry, and the other covers media like stone, wood, metal). There is also a special category titled "Manitoba Waterways." The entry form with full details is on The Pas Arts Council website.
Over the past year COVID has sparked many innovative ways of doing things, and this year’s NJAS (the 44th!) is no exception. While we can’t host an in-person event, our host committee in The Pas is excited to be partnering with the Manitoba Arts Network (MAN) on a virtual show. We’ll be accepting digital images of artworks from northern artists from April 15 to May 01. Once our jurors have chosen the winning artworks, these will be posted on the MAN website through July and August for viewers from far and wide to see (and potentially purchase). A Zoom awards ceremony and artists’ talk is planned for sometime in May.
Following the MAN virtual show, The Pas Arts Council website will host all the works that were submitted by our northern artists through September 2021.
Because this year’s show will be relying on submitted images and photographing artwork accurately can be challenging, the Manitoba Arts Network plans to offer a virtual workshop on photographing art. We’ll post news about that on The Pas Arts Council website as soon as it is confirmed.
We look forward to working with this year’s jurors – Sarah Crawley, Luther Pokrant and Lisa Wood. All are established Manitoba artists working in a range of media who will bring a careful eye to reviewing the works.
The quote that opened this article is attributed to American caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, who truly had great fun making art at the same time as seriously developing his craft. You don’t need to be an “artist” to make art. We encourage everyone who is passionate about creating and expressing to participate in this year’s show! You’ll find most recent information on The Pas Arts Council website.
