Thompson’s cold and rainy weather finally broke Aug. 21 just in time for the final Concert in the Park show of the year.
This musical event featured a trio of acts who kept the crowd at MacLean Park entertained for three hours in the evening.
Following a warm-up performance from members of Aurora Dance Academy, musician Mason Weselowski ran through his own acoustic version of classic songs like “Stand By Me” and “Sweet Child of Mine” solo. He also took the time to serenade the audience with some original tracks.
Unstrung Heroes (Jennifer Nyhof and Kory Wickdahl) joined forces with two members of the Average Joes (Karl Bennett and Justin Fuciarelli) to close out the show with some country-rock covers.
Following Wednesday’s performance, Tracey “Smitty” Smith, owner of Music Makers Productions, said he believes the Concert in the Park’s new format was a giant success.
Back in July, he and the City of Thompson announced that they would be hosting three-hour shows in the evenings instead of the traditional single-hour performances at lunch.
“It made a total difference in response from the community,” said Smith. “You just look at the numbers. I would say there was 80 to 100 people out at every show, which is far better than last year’s noon hour show where we would get five to 10, maybe 30, people. So it’s really awesome to see these people out here supporting this.”
For the 2020 Concert in the Park series, Smith said he would like to put together an evening show every week in the summer instead of the three events they were limited to this year.
