On Aug. 7, the R.D. Parker Collegiate Class of 2021 graduates had the opportunity to come together for their long-awaited prom celebration. Dressed in dashing suits and flowing ball gowns, the RDPC graduates were fortunate to enjoy one more night of celebration together after their convocation ceremony was held on June 30.
While prom is typically held in June, Manitoba public health restrictions required the student and parent prom committees to get creative, and highly adaptable, with planning the celebration while following safety protocols. After a school year of COVID-19 that caused the cancellation of school activities and special events for graduating students, the committees wanted to ensure that the prom event that the students were hoping for would not be lost. Thankfully, the lifting of some health restrictions for the Aug. 7 date finally made prom a possibility. The opportunity was quickly seized.
The event was a collective effort whereby all of the students, parents, teachers, and Thompson community members involved felt it was important to give the graduates a once-in-a-lifetime memory after a year of unpredictability and missed opportunities. The evening saw all graduates in attendance smiling and celebrating for hours.
