The death of another Northern Manitoban as a result of COVID-19 was announced Nov. 1.
The woman in her 70s is the 62nd resident of the region to die as a result of the coronavirus since the pandemic began in Manitoba in March 2020.
Two other women in their 60s from the province’s north died as a result of their infections since Oct. 25.
Three other deaths resulting from the virus were announced by the provincial government on Monday, including those of a man and a woman in their 60s, both from the southern health region which were reported to the government Oct. 29, and that of a man in his 70s from the Prairie Mountain health region that was reported on Saturday.
1,248 Manitobans have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
There have been 483 new cases of COVID-19 in Manitoba since Friday, including 141 on Oct. 29, 97 on Saturday, 149 on Halloween and 96 on Monday.
Over half those cases – 266 – were in the southern health region, while Winnipeg had 95 and the other three health regions about 40 new cases each.
70 of the provinces’s new cases today were in people who are not fully vaccinated.
The north reported eight new cases today, three among people who are not fully vaccinated.
As of Nov. 1, there are currently more than 400 active cases in Northern Manitoba, including 221 in the Norway House health district, 129 in the Pukatawagan/Mathias Colomb health district, 50 in the Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake health district and nine in the Thompson/Mystery Lake health district.
There were more than 600 new cases of the virus in the north in October, an average of about 20 per day.
98 Manitobans are in hospital due to COVID-19, 25 of them in intensive care. 18 of those in hospital are from the north, including five of those in intensive care.
The five-day provincial test positivity rate Nov. 1 was 4.6 per cent but only 1.6 per cent in Winnipeg.
63 per cent of active COVID-19 infection in the province are among unvaccinated people, compared to 30 per cent among fully vaccinated people. Of those in hospital with active cases, 70 per cent are unvaccinated compared to 24 per cent who are fully vaccinated. 85 per cent of patients with active cases in intensive care are unvaccinated, while the other 15 per cent are fully vaccinated.
