A Northern Manitoba RCMP officer is being charged for unsafe gun storage following a probe of a February incident by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.

A charge of careless gun storage has been laid against a Northern Manitoba RCMP officer, it was announced Oct. 28.

Const. Richard Johnson will make his first court appearance Dec. 15 in provincial court in The Pas.

The charge came after the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred in February. No injuries resulted from the alleged unsafe storage, but the IIU civilian director said at that time that it was in the public interest to examine the allegation.

A Thursday press release from the IIU said the civilian director believes there are reasonable grounds to conclude that an offence occurred.

The IIU investigates all serious allegations and incidents involving on- and off-duty police officers in the provinces.
