Thompson city council voted unanimously March 16 to change Eastwood Park’s name to Foundation Park in exchange for $100,000 worth of improvements being paid for by the Thompson Community Foundation.
The donation, which is in addition to a $35,000 grant the Thompson Community Foundation provided in 2019 for the splash pad that is planned for the park, will be used to purchase and install new playground equipment and rubber paving with the goal of making it the first fully accessible park in Thompson.
“It will be for the whole community,” said Mayor Colleen Smook, in an area with a high population of children and youth. “We’re a bit short in that area for things for kids to do.”
Coun. Kathy Valentino said a new name for the park was appropriate recognition of a substantial donation.
“Not very many people are lining up to give us money to improve our projects,” she said.
