The city announced Carol Taylor as its new director of recreation, parks and culture Aug. 28.

City finance project specialist Carol Taylor has been selected as Thompson’s new recreation director, the city announced Aug. 28.

Taylor joined the city as an assistant treasurer in 2006 and became the chief financial officer a year later, overseeing the implementation of capital asset management into the city’s financial planning, said a press release announcing her new role. She became a project specialist in 2010, focusing on implementing finance and accounting software and co-ordinating with other departments. She was recently involved with the deployment of the recreation department’s new central software system.

Taylor filled in as recreation director throughout the summer and wasn’t expecting to move into the position permanently but says she fell in love with it.

“All the staff in recreation really love working together, and they really want to see both the department and the facilities improve and reach their full potential,” she said. “It was really inspiring, and I’m excited to do my part.”

Her first priority in the new job will be reviewing recreation facilities and devising a strategy to ensure their long-term financial sustainability while also maximizing the services offered.

“Before the city or local groups can offer recreational programming, they need a place to do it,” said Taylor. “Whether it’s our corner tot lot or the Norplex Pool, our facilities are the bedrock for recreation and programming in Thompson, and we need to make sure they’re ready for Thompson’s next chapter.”

“Carol has been an invaluable member of our team for over a decade,” said Mayor Dennis Fenske. “We’re excited to see her returning to a director’s role with the city.”
