A Feb. 1 dog attack on Baffin Crescent sent a nine-year-old girl to a Winnipeg hospital for surgery.
Thompson RCMP officers responding to a report of dogs chasing children on Baffin Crescent learned that an injured child had been taken to hospital after three dogs attacked her.
The victim was walking alone to a friend’s house in the late afternoon when the dogs started jumping on her and knocked her to the ground. The animals bit at her and were ripping her jacket. Passers-by came to the girl’s aid, dragging her away from the dogs and taking her to her family, who then took her to hospital.
The girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries to her leg as a result of the attack.
Working with City of Thompson animal control, police found the dogs responsible for the attack. Two were owned by a neighbour of the victim, who was also looking after a third dog. Two Belgian Malinois and one German Shepherd were seized and the 31-year-old man in charge of them was charged with criminal negligence.
The city held vicious animal hearings at which it was decided that all three dogs would be put down. The man who was charged as a result of the dog attack has been banned from owning and registering pets in the future.
