Thompson RCMP seized two machetes and a sawed-off .22 calibre rifle in three separate incidents July 5.
The gun was seized on Monday afternoon after police received a report of a man holding a firearm in the parking lot of a business on Thompson Drive. The suspect was found near Grey Wolf Bay and arrested after a short foot chase. The gun was located nearby and the 24-year-old remains in custody.
The first knife seizure occurred around 2:30 a.m. when police responded to a fight on Parkway Crescent. They learned that two male suspects with a weapon had fled on foot. They were located nearby and arrested. A machete was seized and the two accused, aged 14 and 15, were later released with court-imposed conditions for an upcoming court date in Thompson.
A report of a man walking down Churchill Drive with a weapon just before 5 p.m. led to the seizure of a machete and the arrest of a 22-year-old man, who was later released for a court date in Thompson in August.
“Thankfully there were no injuries to the public or our officers,” said Thompson RCMP detachment commander Insp. Chris Hastie in an RCMP news release. “Our officers will continue to work diligently to make the City of Thompson a safer place and appreciate the public’s timely assistance in reporting suspicious activities, such as these, to the police.”
Police continue to investigate the incidents.
