Approximately 800 packages were sold during October resulting in approximately $5,000 being raised for Manitoba Crime Stoppers, the organization says.

Manitoba Crime Stoppers would like to recognize the Thompson businesses that participated with us, making the fundraising effort a success. Thanks also to the public who supported Manitoba Crime Stoppers through their purchases. The $5,000 funds the TIPS program, aimed at solving crimes in our communities.

The Thompson businesses involved include: Robin's Donuts, McDonald's Restaurant, InSparation Day Spa, Anything Grows, Curves, and the Thompson Zoo.

Manitoba Crime Stoppers is a community-based program that involving the public, media, and police in an effort to solve crimes that have been committed in Manitoba.

Informants who have information about unsolved crimes are able to pass on their tips confident that their names or other personal information will never be required. Tipsters will not have to give a statement to police or appear in court. This information is relayed by Crime Stoppers to local police authorities.

As an incentive to tipsters, cash awards are offered. A code number is given to protect a caller's identity and to ensure that an award can be paid anonymously once the police investigation is completed.

A volunteer board of directors representing all parts of rural Manitoba co-ordinate the program at the provincial level, establish policies and raise funds.

At the local level, volunteers serve on regional boards and on community committees. They are involved in publicizing the program, raising funds and overseeing award payments at the community level. Volunteers receive no financial compensation for their efforts.

Tipsters can reach Manitoba Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 (TIPS).
