Twenty-nine dogs from Northern Manitoba set out from Thompson on a 30-hour journey to a new life near Ottawa, Ontario June 15.
The dogs being transported by Furever Family Dog Rescue include adults and puppies, some of which were picked up yesterday from communities north of Thompson after Northern Manitoba Paws in Need took five spay-and-return dogs back to their families in South Indian Lake.
“They go out with their babies and their babies stay in rescue and the moms are returned to the family free, fully vaccinated and fixed and everything for free for the families to have them back so they’re safe and no more babies are happening,” said Vicki McNevin of Northern Manitoba Paws in Need in Thompson.
Janet Seabrooke from Furever Family Dog Rescue is one of the two drivers transporting the canine cargo to their new home but the duo have plenty of help on the way.
“We have teams that meet us in Winnipeg, then Thunder Bay, then Sault Ste. Marie and then from Sault Ste. Marie to my place is the last bout and we do what’s called walk, water and feed,” Seabrooke says.
Because of the design of the minibus the dogs are being transported in, which has kennel cages from floor to ceiling along both sides of the rear compartment, the breaks every eight hours on this particular trip are more for walking and playing, Seabrooke says.
“We can still feed and water on the bus because we have access to them at all times,” she says. “That way everybody’s chilling and looking out the bus window and they’re all so calm in there.”
