Thompson Fire Chief Lynden Carkener said flex-line joints that posed fire or explosion risk and were being replaced in southern Manitoba had already been changed four years earlier in Thompson.
The fire department responded to a call on Princeton Drive where smoke was coming out of a basement window. Firefighters made a forcible entry and extinguished a burning garbage bag. A child playing with matches was believed to be the cause of the blaze.

Mayor Don MacLean announced that he would be seeking a fifth term as Thompson's mayor, a job he had held for the previous 12 years. "Thompsonites have ben subjected to three years of a divisive council that had difficulty making decisions and are hard to work with," said the mayor.
Attendees of the Thompson Chamber of Commerce's first meeting of the fall season were told that 2,184 tourists visited the chamber's tourist booth in its first season of operation, including 316 American visitors from 35 states.

The school board was presented with results of the Grade 12 language arts and mathematics test written by 100 R.D. Parker Collegiate students. The mean score for the school district was 57.5 per cent compared to the provincial average of 64.6 per cent, while the pass rate was 75 per cent, lower than the 83.6 per cent provincial average.
Inco remained hopeful that a strike by unionized workers at its Thompson operations could be avoided, but the United Steelworkers of America had recommended that members of Local 6166 reject the company's offer, which included a three-year wage freeze.
