On Nov. 25, members of the Salvation Army kicked off their 2017 Red Kettle Campaign by performing Christmas carols at the City Centre Mall.

According to Thompson Salvation Army director Roy Bladen, shoppers will be able to submit donations at five locations until Dec. 23: the City Centre Mall, Safeway, Liquor Mart, Family Foods and Shoppers Drug Mart.

With upcoming layoffs at Vale, Bladen said they don’t expect to clear the record breaking $50,140 benchmark that they achieved last year.

Whatever the amount, this year’s donations will still go towards the food bank to help fund worthwhile causes such as their Christmas hamper giveaways. These hampers contain food for families and toys for children, and are worth around $150 a piece.

“This year we are already, at this point, up to 108 hampers, and that has never happened so quick before,” said Bladen.

If you would like to volunteer for the Red Kettle drive, please contact local co-ordinator Cheryl Harnum at 204-307-0709.
