A Thompson RCMP officer is facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm in connection with an incident that occurred when he was arresting a 50-year-old man at the Thompson Inn last June.
The incident was investigated by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), which looks into all serious allegations involving on- and off-duty police officers in the province.
The IIU said in a news release that civilian director Zane Tessler was satisfied that there were reasonable and probable grounds to believe that a criminal offence had occurred.
RCMP Const. Jeremiah Dumont-Fontaine met with IIU investigators Jan. 7 and will appear in provincial court in Thompson Feb. 25.
At the time of the incident, the IIU said police had responded to a call about someone causing a disturbance around 6 p.m. June 5. During the course of the arrest, the man received a laceration on his forehead and was taken to Thompson General Hospital where the wound was sutured.
