The Thompson RCMP detachment is encouraging residents of the City of Thompson to be extra diligent when it comes to ensuring their vehicles are locked.

Sgt. Rob Collen, the Thompson RCMP detachment's media spokesman, says there has been an increase in the city recently in vehicle break-ins, especially those that happen at night.

"We've made our members aware of that during nighttime patrols, and are ensuring they keep an eye out in that regard," Collen explains. He also points out that most of the break-ins involve unlocked vehicles, and that the suspects don't seem to be looking to steal the vehicles themselves but items in the vehicles.

Collen says one of the reasons for the increase in this type of crime is probably because school is out, explaining most of the suspects apprehended for vehicle break-ins are young people. He also says that now that the weather is warmer it is more likely that would-be thieves would spend more time prowling around outside as opposed to in the colder winter months.

Collen says a good idea for those who are looking to prevent vehicle break-ins would be to install motion detector lights, since suspects usually want to operate in the darkness where they are less noticeable.

Several cases of vehicle break-ins are still under the investigation with the Thompson RCMP.
