The Thompson RCMP have safely rescued a 36-year-old man from Finland, who was hiking alone in the Orr Lake area and in distress.
On June 22 at 2 p.m. Thompson RCMP were notified by an international call centre of a distress alert from a GPS emergency beacon, located approximately 50 kilometres away from Thompson, 10 kilometres inland from PR 280.
An air search with medical support from Thompson Fire and Emergency Services was conducted by helicopter, and the man was found at 5:45 p.m. at the provided GPS co-ordinates and successfully extracted from the rescue scene. He was medically treated en route to Thompson and was brought to the Thompson General Hospital, where he was further treated and released.
The man had been brought inland by helicopter several days earlier to go hiking by himself in the area but had lost most of his gear while making his way across a river.
The Thompson RCMP detachment is encouraging any people going inland on any expeditions to ensure they have a report in to the RCMP about their route plans and departure and return times to avoid any potentially dangerous or life-threatening situations.
