The Paint Lake Volunteer Fire Department (PLVFD) has been hosting an annual pancake breakfast for over a decade to help generate extra funds, and their upcoming event on Saturday, Sept. 1 is no different.
This time around the PLVFD is also providing people an opportunity to sell second-hand items out of the trunks of vehicles for $10 a space.
“’Junk in the trunk’ is something new we’re going to try this year,” said PLVFD fire chief Frank DeRose. “It’s kind of like a flea market I guess, where we have people sign up and show up and they can sell homemade crafts, or baked goods or just regular garage sale items that they want to try to sell.”
The pancake breakfast costs $6 for adults to enter and $4 for children. All the proceeds generated from this event will go towards the PLVFD, which, as a not-for profit organization, is only given a certain amount of money each year through a contract with Manitoba Sustainable Development.
“That amount covers all of our expenses that we have with respect to insurance coverage for the trucks,” said DeRose. “It also covers other things as well like our various bills, hydro bills, but it doesn’t cover for anything extra that we want or need.”
According to DeRose, these desired extra resources include upgrading their trucks, work clothing and other equipment.
This year’s PLVFD pancake breakfast runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at their fire hall on Lakeview Drive, and will be followed up by some “islanders vs. mainlanders” softball at the Paint Lake baseball diamond.
