Former Deerwood School Grade 8 teacher Val Little, far right, seen here in a 2015 file photo, is retiring at the end of June after working for the School District of Mystery Lake since 1986.

School board trustees heard at their May 13 meeting about a new administrator being hired for one school and a teacher employed since the mid-1980s retiring.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Amanda Butler,” said School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) co-superintendent Angele Bartlett during her human resources and policy report. “She has been awarded the vice-principalship of Wapanohk Community School for next year so we’re very happy for her. Amanda’s one of our leadership intern participants as well so I’m very happy that she put her interest forward. We congratulate her and we welcome her to the admin team.”

Butler, a music teacher at Wapanohk, will take over from Celina Dumas, who has been employed by SDML since 2008 and moved into administration in 2014.*

Later in her human resources update, Bartlett said that Val Little, who taught at Deerwood School for 29 years, would be retiring effective June 30.

“Miss Little has been employed with the district since 1986,” Bartlett said. “She began her career in ‘86 teaching half-time at Juniper School and then was awarded a full-time position in ‘87 as a permanent Grade 8 teacher at Deerwood School and she remained there for 29 years of her career. She’s currently working as a literacy intervention support teacher out of the school board office. All those who’ve resigned and particularly Miss Little with her retirement, we wish them all well … and congratulate them all.”

* The original version of this article said that Celina Dumas had been employed by the district since 2014 after working for it before, leaving and coming back. The Thompson Citizen apologizes to Celina Dumas for the error.
