Wapanohk Community School’s Aboriginal Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 8 paid tribute to the memory of Percy Laubmann, a Northern Manitoba resident who fought during Canada’s involvement in the Korean War.
Laubmann died in October 2017 but his family was on hand during Thursday’s assembly to celebrate his military service as a member of the Royal Canadian Infantry and recall the 15 years he spent sharing his story with students of the School District of Mystery Lake.
According Laubmann’s obituary, he also served as the mayor and chief of his hometown of Pikwitonei and fought hard for its transition from a community to a First Nation reserve.
To help cement Laubmann’s legacy, Wapanohk principal Kathleen Kelson presented his family members, including his widow Martha, with a plaque that provides a brief summary of his military service.
Kelson later told the Thompson Citizen that this plaque will be displayed in the school’s front lobby to make sure that all of their students get a chance to read it.
Thompson’s Remembrance Day service is taking place Nov. 11 at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena. Public seating begins at 10 a.m.
