The club announced Aug. 31 that it is shutting down permanently after 52 years due to lack of interest and vandalism to its buildings on the banks of the Burntwood River, which will be transferred to another non-profit organization to use or sold for salvage.

The Twilight Waterski Club is closing down after 52 years.

Jeff Lindstrom announced the closure in posts in Thompson Facebook groups on Aug. 31.

“We have tried numerous times to get the club up and running but with little interest and constant vandalism of the building we have decided it can no longer run. The boats have been damaged from neglect and break-ins. We have sold most of the equipment and the boats. The building itself has been vandalized constantly over the years. The recent break-in was devastating to us.”

The club hopes to find another non-profit organizations to take over its buildings. If such a club cannot be found, the buildings on the banks of the Burntwood River near the end of Manasan Drive may be sold for salvage or removed with any proceeds donated to a non-profit organization of the club’s executive’s choosing.

“It is not on city property and we don’t own the land so it can not be sold to use privately,” Lindstrom wrote.

The club has not been overly active in recent years compared to its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s.

In 2013 at the Thompson Health & Leisure Mart, the club’s promotion co-ordinator at the time, Danielle Savoie, said that many people who stopped by their table said they had no idea the club was still running. Declining membership and vandalism were issues for the club at that time as well.
