Thompson, Manitoba is gearing up for an exhilarating event in 2026 as it prepares to host the Manitoba Winter Games powered by Manitoba Hydro.

Thompson, Manitoba is gearing up for an exhilarating event in 2026 as it prepares to host the Manitoba Winter Games powered by Manitoba Hydro. This prestigious sporting event is set to bring together over 1,500 athletes, 300 coaches, 100 officials, and an astounding 750 volunteers from across the province.

 

The Manitoba Winter Games is the largest ongoing multi-sport program in the province, attracting over 1,900 participants who compete at the highest level once every two years. The event will feature 12 sports, including ringette, archery, speed skating, futsal, alpine skiing, curling, gymnastics, figure skating, cross country skiing, wrestling, badminton, and hockey, showcasing the diverse athletic talent present in Manitoba.

 

An economic impact study conducted after the 2018 Games in Thompson revealed that the event generated $1.7 million in economic activity in Manitoba, making a significant contribution to the local economy. The Games also provided a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, with some of them moving on to compete in national and international events such as the Canada Games, Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, and even the Olympic Games.

 

Janet McMahon, President & CEO of Sport Manitoba, expressed her confidence in the City of Thompson's ability to host yet another successful edition of the Games, citing the community's passion, economic impact, and lasting legacies from past events.

 

Mayor Colleen Smook echoed this sentiment, affirming Thompson's enthusiasm to host the Games for the second time in eight years. She emphasized the community's unwavering hospitality and organizational prowess, ensuring that the 2026 Games will be a resounding success.

 

The co-chairs of the 2026 Manitoba Winter Games, Todd Harwood and Cristy Andres, shared their excitement for hosting the event once again, underscoring Thompson's tradition of organizing exceptional sporting events and their commitment to creating lasting memories for young Manitoba athletes.

 

The Manitoba Winter Games are supported by Sport Manitoba, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the development of amateur sport in Manitoba. The event is also sponsored by Manitoba Hydro, a leading electricity and natural gas distribution utility in Canada, which has been promoting the spirit of sport in communities across Manitoba since 2006.

 

Jeff Betker, Vice-President of External and Indigenous Relations and Communications at Manitoba Hydro, expressed their pride in being the title sponsor of the Manitoba Games, emphasizing the company's commitment to supporting events that create a vibrant and stronger Manitoba for all.
