Eight Thompson taekwondo students and their instructor competed in a Winnipeg tournament on April 30 after having only a month to train since receiving the invite.
Sikad Taekwondo students competed in poomsae (patterns) and sparring competitions, capturing seven medals in total despite often sparring against more experienced competitors.
“I am so proud of my students performing proper, strong patterns,” said their instructor Mitch Nicolas, who won her sparring division despite facing three black belts.
Green stripe Alexis Ernest-Yoko placed third while competing against red stripe and black stripe holders and also captured first in her poomsae division.
Yellow stripe Jill Ellsworth placed third in her poomsae division.
Seven-year-old Ethan Butler placed second out of six competitors in his division, as did Rovic Larino.
Green belt Shane Umacam placed third in his poomsae division.
“I would like to thank all the parents for their non-stop support,” said Nicolas. “Sikad Team will continue their training to prepare for an upcoming fall tournament.”
