Manitoba's provincial peewee lacrosse team, which included Thompsonites Taylor Ritchie and goaltender Glenn Shatford on its roster, won two of nine games at the peewee lacrosse nationals Aug. 3-9 in Whitby, Ont., finishing in a three-way tie for sixth place with Quebec and Nova Scotia in the round-robin standings, then losing a close game in the medal round.
Manitoba dropped both games on the first day of the tournament, losing 7-3 to Iroquois and 5-1 to Saskatchewan. The team's third straight loss came in a 23-0 rout at the hands of Ontario the following day before the team regrouped to pull off a 6-5 victory over Quebec. The team then dropped two close games on Aug. 5, losing 5-4 to Alberta and 6-4 to Nova Scotia. Manitoba's second victory came Aug. 6 as they defeated New Brunswick 6-2 before dropping an 18-0 decision to British Columbia. Their final game was another one-goal affair, this time a 3-2 loss to Nova Scotia in the B bronze medal game Aug. 8.
Shatford recorded three assists over the nine games, while Ritchie had one assist and two penalty minutes in the tournament.
Ontario defeated B.C. 6-3 to win the A gold medal while Quebec prevailed 6-4 over New Brunswick in overtime to win the B side gold.
Shatford, 11, and Ritchie, 12, were among 20 players chosen for Manitoba's provincial peewee lacrosse team after attending tryouts in Winnipeg.
