WINNIPEG — Homicide investigators are now part of a probe into a weekend fire in Winnipeg after two people who were rescued from an apartment in the burning building died in hospital.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service say smoke and flames were visible when firefighters arrived at the three-storey residential and commercial building on Atlantic Ave. early Saturday morning.

Police say firefighters rescued a man and a woman in one of the suites and both were taken to hospital in critical condition, but neither survived.

Two additional adult victims were treated for smoke inhalation.

Police say the fire has been deemed suspicious, but no arrests have been made yet.

Investigators have identified the deceased as 49-year-old Geda Wodisso and 38-year-old Zenabu Gula.
