Three men charged in connection to the 2019 killing of an 18-year-old in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) were sentenced to life in prison June 1 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
Patrick Linklater was sentenced to life without possibility of parole for 20 years for his role in the February 2019 murder of Marcus Spence, who had found out that he was going to be a father just a few weeks before he was killed.
Gerald Spence was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years.
Russell Sinclair received a sentence of life without possibility of parole for 10 years.
A fourth man, Waylon McKay, who was arrested in March 2019 for first-degree murder in connection to Marcus Spence’s death, still awaits trial.
The murder prompted NCN to institute a ban on alcohol in the community for more than a month, which reportedly resulted in 50 per cent drop in violent crime.
