Thanks to a $6,000 donation from 100 Women Who Care Thompson, the student group known as Hands, Heart and Hope (H3) will be able to finance their free lunch program for at least the next 10 months.
According to H3 member Hayley Jenkins, the group is going to distribute a full meal consisting of sandwiches, fruit, yogurt and drinks to their fellow students at R.D. Parker Collegiate every Wednesday around 11 a.m.
While Jenkins said this program is partly designed to help increase attendance, she told the Thompson Citizen that they also aim to feed those who may not be able to afford a nutritious meal.
“There’s a lot of low-income families in Thompson and we know that lots of students live in low-income families, so we’re just trying to give back to the community.”
This isn’t the first time that H3 has gone out of their way to help those in need. Throughout the last year alone, this social justice group have spearheaded a number of local initiatives, like collecting 2,000 pounds of food for the Thompson Food Bank and gathering over 80 toys for the Salvation Army.
H3’s focus extends beyond Thompson, as the group also raised enough money to build a well in Haiti back in 2016.
