Wapanohk Community School sent out a letter April 13 notifying parents and guardians of students that at least one person with a confirmed case of COVID-19 had been in the school April 6, 7 and 9 in the Grade 7 and Grade 8 classroom while they may have been infectious.

The letter said close contacts have been identified and are being advised to self-isolate. Any student whose parent or guardian hasn’t heard from the school and is not contacted by a public health official within two days of the letter going out is not considered to have been exposed to the virus from this case or cases, the letter said.

There have been 13 cases of COVID-19 among people linked to schools in Thompson in the last two weeks up to April 13, not including this latest case at Wapanohk, according to provincial data online.

These include nine cases at R.D. Parker Collegiate, three at Deerwood School and one at Westwood School. None of these school-linked cases involve COVID variants of concern and the virus wasn’t necessarily contracted while at school.

Other Northern Manitoba COVID cases linked to schools in the last two weeks include one case at Frontier Collegiate in Cranberry Portage, six cases at three schools in Flin Flon and one case in The Pas, which is the first Northern Manitoba COVID case involving a variant of concern.

Across Manitoba, there have been 133 cases of COVID-19 among people linked to schools in the last two weeks, including 118 students and 67 staff. 67 schools have had one or more cases and 21 cases have involved variants of concern.

Since the school year started, there have been 2,569 COVID cases among people linked to Manitoba schools, including 1,990 student cases and 579 staff cases.
