Manitoba RCMP say they continue to aggressively investigate the 2013 killing of Leah Anderson, who was 15 years old and back in Gods Lake Narrows during school holidays when she was found dead.
Anderson had left her house Jan. 4, 2013 to go skating at the arena but she never made it. Her severely beaten body was discovered on a remote trail two days later, her remains having been disturbed by animals. An autopsy showed numerous defensive wounds on her hands and determined that she had died before 10 p.m. on the night she was last seen.
DNA evidence from Anderson’s body and clothing showed that her attacker had been male and police followed up on tips about her killing by speaking to more than 270 people. Persons of interest were identified, some of whom were cleared of involvement through polygraph and DNA testing as well as corroborating statements to confirm alibis. Investigators narrowed the pool of suspects further and determined that Anderson’s killer was someone she knew and felt comfortable with.
A 23-year-old from Gods Lake Narrows who was arrested in July 26 before being released without charges the following day remains a suspect, RCMP say.
“It has been six years, but Leah is not forgotten,” said a Jan. 11 RCMP press release. “Leah was a 15-year-old girl with so much potential. She was popular, funny, and had a fun-loving spirit. The RCMP wants to bring the person responsible for her death to justice. We continue to aggressively work this investigation to find justice for Leah, her family, and her community.”
