Manitoba’s police watchdog agency is investigating the death of a man who was arrested in Oxford House March 26.
Oxford House RCMP officers responded to a disturbance call March 26 and arrested an intoxicated 31-year-old male around 10 a.m. He was found unresponsive in the detachment cell shortly before 6 p.m. and taken to the nursing station. He was later transported from the nursing station to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg where he died March 28.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), which investigates serious incidents involving on- and off-duty police officers in the province, was notified of the incident March 30 and assumed responsibility for the investigation in accordance with section 66(4) of the Police Services Act. Because a fatality is involved, a civilian monitor will be requested from the Manitoba Police Commission.
The IIU says that witnesses or anyone with information or video footage that may assist the investigation can call them toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
