Thirty-two candidates are running for 22 positions in the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) province-wide election May 31, three of them in the Thompson region.
The Thompson region candidates – Julyda Lagimodiere for Thompson Region vice-president and Mildred Dorion and Vincent Mark Parenteau for Thompson regional directors – will not have to stand for election as there are no additional candidates, but elections will likely be necessary for vice-president of the Winnipeg Region and for regional directors in the Winnipeg, Southeast and Northwest Metis council regions, though this will not be certain until all the nominees have had all their qualifications confirmed and the period for challenges expires.
Incumbent David Chartrand is the only candidate for president, while there are four candidates each for Southeast, Winnipeg and Northwest regional director positions, and three candidates for Winnipeg Region vice-president.
For positions for which elections are required, advance polls will take place May 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.* and May 25 from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Regular polls will be open May 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Métis citizens who wish to vote in the MMF elections should ensure they are on the voters’ list for the local with which they are registered by May 9.
