The Manitoba Liberal Party and the Green Party of Manitoba came up with candidates to carry their respective banners in the Thompson electoral district for the Sept. 10 provincial election before the Aug. 26 deadline for registration of candidates.
The Liberals will be represented by Darla Contois, a member of Misipawsitik Cree Nation at Grand Rapids, who studied theatre at Manitoba Theatre for Young People, the University of Manitoba and the Centre for Indigenous Theatre. The author of the one-person play White Man’s Indian, which tells the story of a Cree teenage girl who must navigate a city high school, Contois also set up the first Soaring Eagles Camp outside the Manitoba legislature in Winnipeg in 2018 following the acquittal of Saskatchewan farmer Gerald Stanley in the shooting death of Colten Boushie.
The Green party candidate is Meagan Jemmett of Thompson, who grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia and attended the University of Alberta and then law school at the University of Toronto. Jemmett first practised law in Thunder Bay before moving to Thompson in 2017. She is currently working as a partner at Jemmett Jack Barristers & Solicitors.
