The number of Manitobans being hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 continues to rise, reaching 118 on Nov. 5, up from 106 two days before.
24 Manitobans are in intensive care due to the coronavirus but the number of admissions is not rising as quickly as it is for overall hospitalizations.
The province had 130 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, 87 of them among unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated people. Three more deaths resulting from the virus have been added to the provincial total since yesterday, taking it up to 1,256. One of those whose death was reported in the past 24 hours is a northern resident, the 63rd person from the region to due of a coronavirus infection since the pandemic started.
12 new COVID infections were reported for the north Nov. 5. There are 16 residents from the region in hospital due to their infections, one of whom is in intensive care. There have been 90 positive tests for the virus in the north over the first four days of November and there are about 300 active cases in the region.
Health districts reporting active cases on Friday were Norway House (187), Pukatawagan/Mathias Colomb (57), Bunibonibee/Oxford House/Manto Sipi/God’s River/God’s Lake (24), Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake (16), Island Lake (7) and Cross Lake/Pimicikamak (4).
Manitoba released regional test positivity rates for the first time on a regular basis Nov. 5. The north had the second highest five-day test positivity rate on Nov. 3, at 9.5 per cent, well below the 14.5 per cent rate in the southern health region but twice the provincial rate of 4.7 per cent. The rate in the north had been falling from a high of 13.2 per cent over the last week of October but began rising again Nov. 2.
61 per cent of active cases of COVID-19 on Friday were in unvaccinated people while 66 per cent of those in hospital with active coronavirus infections were unvaccinated and 95 per cent of those in intensive care with active infections had not received a single dose of vaccine.
