Norman Northstars defenceman Cheechoo Lathlicn has been named the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League CCM player of the week for the second time this season after recording seven points in two games Jan. 28-29.
The 6-foot, 190-lb Lathlin, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, figured in seven of his team’s nine goals over the two games, scoring once and adding an assist in a 3-2 loss to the Parkland Rangers on Friday and recording one goal and four assists in a 7-2 win over the Yellowhead Chiefs on Saturday.
The 17-year-old, who is in his last season of U18 eligibility, is fourth in team scoring with 14 goals and 30 assists in 31 games this season, placing him 17th in league scoring and second among blueliners. He has the fourth-most goals on the Northstars and the second-highest assist total. He has scored seven times on the power play and has 21 assists with the man advantage, second on the team behind Brady Krentz.
Lathlin was named the league’s defenceman of the month in November after recording 12 points in eight games and was the player of the week in October after scoring in each of his first three games.
Lathlin’s previous best goal total was three in 2019-20 and in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season. He has more than doubled the highest previous point total of his U18 career, which was 20 points in 46 games in 2019-20.
